Tsunan Sunflower Square is a breathtaking sunflower field located on the Okinohara Plateau in Tsunan Town, Niigata Prefecture. It is a quintessential symbol of summer. The site spans approximately 4 hectares, where sunflowers are planted with carefully staggered blooming schedules to ensure that visitors can enjoy the golden landscape for an extended period throughout the summer season. The vast, open space provides a sense of liberation and a deep connection with nature.
This square was developed to allow many people to enjoy the richness of local nature and the changing seasons. Rather than simply planting flowers, the area is managed through systematic cultivation, dividing the fields into three distinct zones to stagger the blooming periods. This thoughtful approach reflects the local community's desire to ensure that no matter when a visitor arrives during the summer, they are greeted by the iconic 'summer landscape.'
The greatest attraction is the sea of sunflowers that fills your entire field of vision. Seeing countless sunflowers facing the sun across such a vast area is a truly majestic sight. Additionally, an observation deck allows visitors to look down upon the field, offering a panoramic view of the golden carpet from a high vantage point. For families, the 'Sunflower Maze' is a popular feature, providing a fun way for children to play and explore within the natural environment.
The sunflowers reach their peak from July to August. For the 2026 season, the event is scheduled from July 24th to August 16th, and we highly recommend visiting during this window. The brightest daylight hours are ideal for photography, as the sunlight makes the vibrant yellow of the sunflowers glow brilliantly. However, as this is an outdoor activity in the height of summer, please prepare for strong sunlight by bringing hats, umbrellas, and taking necessary heatstroke precautions.
Visitors can truly experience the essence of the season here. Taking photos against the backdrop of the vast sunflower fields creates unforgettable memories. The Sunflower Maze offers a special adventure for young children. During peak times, local stalls may also be present, allowing you to feel the local energy and enjoy a relaxing moment amidst the summer breeze.
There are many other charming sightseeing spots around Tsunan Town. Since access is primarily by car, we recommend planning a route that includes nearby driving courses. Depending on the season, you can enjoy various other natural landscapes and botanical beauty, making it a wonderful way to fully experience the rich nature of Niigata Prefecture.
