Toyama City Family Park is a zoo located within Shiroyama Park on the Kureha Hills in the western part of Toyama City. Operating under the philosophy of 'Creating a New Satoyama where both People and Forests Thrive,' the park focuses on the themes of animals, the Satoyama landscape, and the local community. Established in 1984, the facility was developed with a strong emphasis on environmental protection. Today, it is recognized as a 'Rare Species Conservation Zoo,' receiving certification from the Ministry of the Environment for its contributions to biodiversity. A standout achievement is its pioneering work in the artificial breeding of the Japanese Ptarmigan (Raicho); in 2019, the facility achieved a significant milestone by successfully managing natural hatching through artificial breeding efforts. This role is vital in preserving Japan's natural heritage for future generations.
The park features diverse animal habitats tailored to each species' needs. Visitors can observe large mammals such as giraffes, zebras, and tigers, as well as red pandas, otters, penguins, and various birds, insects, and reptiles. The 'Nature Zone' is a key feature, offering immersive experiences like nest boxes equipped with cameras to observe flying squirrels, and nature trails that change beautifully with the seasons. The facility also hosts seasonal night observation events in its biotopes, allowing guests to see animals in their most natural state.
The park offers different charms throughout the year. From spring to autumn, the nature trails and grassy lawns are ideal for outdoor activities, including observing seasonal plants and insects. Around June, the 'Hotaru no Oyado' may host firefly observation events. Please note that during the winter months, opening hours tend to be shorter, so it is advisable to check the schedule in advance. Daytime visits are best for seeing active animal behavior, while the evening offers a peaceful, serene atmosphere.

You can enjoy horse riding at the 'Horse Riding Area,' engage in learning at the Nature Experience Center, or take a relaxing walk along the nature trails. As the park features natural terrain and many walking paths, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Since most activities are outdoors, please bring items for sun protection or warmth (hats, drinks, seasonal gear) depending on the weather. To protect the animals and the environment, please do not feed the animals, avoid photography in restricted areas, and remember to take your trash home with you. Regarding payment, while cash is widely used, some small facilities within the park may require cash even if credit cards or IC cards are accepted elsewhere.
