Kuzuka Kofun is one of the most significant decorated burial mounds in Eastern Japan, located in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is a nationally designated historic site and a keyhole-shaped mound (zenpokoenfun) constructed in the early 7th century. The most striking feature is the colorful murals inside the stone chamber. Using red pigment (bengala) on white clay walls, ancient artists depicted intricate geometric patterns, swords, shields, and horse gear. The surrounding area is maintained as a historic park, allowing visitors to observe the exterior of the mound and the serene landscape at any time.

The mound is believed to have been constructed during the late Kofun period in the early 7th century. It gained fame following a 1973 excavation, which confirmed it as one of the first decorated tombs discovered in Japan. Access to the actual murals inside the stone chamber is limited to only two periods per year: spring and autumn. During the spring opening, hours are 9:00–16:30, and during the autumn opening, they are 9:00–16:00. It is highly recommended to plan your visit around these specific seasons to see the real art. Outside of these periods, the historic park remains open for strolls, offering a peaceful way to enjoy the historical landscape and the natural surroundings during the bright daylight hours.
