Tarumae Goro is a breathtaking gorge located at the foot of Mount Tarumae in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. It is officially designated as a natural conservation area. The most striking feature is the contrast between the steep, rugged rock walls and the thick, deep green moss clinging to them. This mossy texture is often described as a "velvet carpet," creating a sense of profound natural beauty and serenity.
To protect its precious ecosystem, this area was designated as a municipal natural conservation area in 1979. For decades, the area has maintained a rich and delicate balance of life, preserving a landscape where the strength of nature and its delicate beauty coexist. The surrounding forests serve as a vital habitat for local wildlife, offering a profound sense of connection to the wild.
The most spectacular view is seen from the bridge overlooking the gorge. The interplay of light and shadow between the steep cliffs and the deep riverbed creates a mesmerizing spectacle. June is particularly special; during this early summer season, the sunlight penetrates deep into the gorge, making the water surface and the moss-covered rocks sparkle with an ethereal light.
The best time to visit is from May to August when the fresh greenery is most vibrant. June is highly recommended as the angle of the sunlight enhances the visual depth of the gorge. For safety, it is advised to avoid entering the area during early morning or late evening, as these are times when wildlife, such as brown bears, are most active. Visiting during bright daylight hours ensures both a clearer view and a safer experience.
Visitors can enjoy nature observation via the walking paths and the scenic viewpoint from the bridge. Please note that while visitors could once descend into the river, it is now strictly prohibited to enter the water due to the risk of rockfalls. From the safety of the bridge, you can contemplate the 6-meter high cliffs, the lush mossy walls, and the crystal-clear stream below.
The area around the gorge features several spots perfect for enjoying Hokkaido's natural landscapes. There are various routes through the surrounding forests that showcase the unique character of the Tomakomai natural conservation district.
As this is a natural wilderness area, wearing comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing is highly recommended. Since this is a habitat for brown bears, please remain vigilant.
