The Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry) of Tanokogō is a historic tree with over 100 years of age, located in Tanokogō, Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture. Standing alone on the mid-slope of a hill, its presence is truly commanding, offering a sense of seasonal transition that is deeply integrated into the local landscape. Notably, this tree tends to bloom earlier than the common Somei Yoshino variety, making it a beloved symbol that announces the arrival of spring to the local community and visitors alike.
This cherry tree is a precious natural heritage site, graciously opened to the public by a private owner. Having endured for over a century, it has been carefully preserved as a vital part of the local scenery. Because the site is made available through the understanding and cooperation of the local community, visitors are kindly asked to show respect to both the nature and the residents when visiting.
The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the sight of the weeping cherry blossoms in full bloom. Despite being a single tree, its branches spread wide and gracefully drape downward, creating a unique and poetic atmosphere different from typical cherry blossom groves. Due to its location on a hillside, you can enjoy the blossoms alongside the expansive, open views of the surrounding landscape. Many people visit during the peak bloom to witness this spectacular sight.
The best time to visit is from mid-March to April. Since it often blooms earlier than the standard Somei Yoshino, we recommend checking the local blooming status before your trip. During bright daylight hours, the elegant curves of the branches and the delicate colors of the flowers are most vivid, making it an excellent time for photography. Please note that the scenery changes constantly depending on the weather and season.

Hasami Town is also highly famous as a production center for Japanese ceramics (Hasami-yaki ware). After viewing the cherry blossoms, we recommend exploring local cafes and enjoying regional gourmet food. There are many charming coffee shops and restaurants scattered throughout the area. Additionally, you can visit local hot spring facilities (such as Hasami Onsen) to perfectly conclude your sightseeing trip.

As the tree is located on a hillside, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress appropriately for the outdoor environment and season.
Photography is permitted, but please strictly observe the boundaries and do not enter the fenced areas around the tree. Please be considerate of other visitors.
Due to the natural terrain, there are slopes and uneven paths. Access for wheelchairs may be limited.
