Ashigeyozaki Observatory is a premier viewpoint located at the northern tip of the Tanesashi Coast in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. Situated within the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, this area is recognized as one of the most iconic scenic spots in the region. Positioned on the Samekado Cape, the observatory offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the vast Pacific Ocean and the rugged, rocky shoreline below. This location holds a unique historical significance, as parts of the area were used as military facilities toward the end of World War II. The name of the area is believed to originate from the Ainu word 'Tanne-esashi,' meaning 'long cape.' Furthermore, the profound beauty of this landscape has long served as a source of inspiration for many great Japanese artists, including the renowned novelist Shiro Ryotaro and the painter Kaii Higashiyama.
The greatest draw is the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean from the observatory. The nearby Samekado Lighthouse creates a striking contrast against the cape and the sea, making for a perfect photo opportunity. The observatory also serves as the starting point for the Tanesashi Coast walking trails. As you walk south along the coastline, you can observe diverse geological formations such as rocky shores, sandy beaches, and sea cliffs. Additionally, the seasonal flora is a major highlight; with over 650 species of plants, including the famous beach roses (Hamasun), the landscape is painted in different colors depending on when you visit.

Directly below the observatory, you can visit the Samekado Lighthouse and enjoy a walk around its perimeter. Continuing south, the landscape leads to the Osuga Coast, known for its white singing sands and pine groves, and the area around Tanesashi Coast Station, which features natural grass lawns. These areas are all connected by well-maintained walking paths. Additionally, the nearby Shirahama Beach is a great spot for enjoying seaside leisure activities.
As this is a coastal cape, it can become quite windy. Please bring a windproof jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes. To protect the natural environment, please do not pick plants or leave any litter behind.
