The Isson Tanaka Memorial Museum displays the collection of Japanese painter Isson Tanaka, who used a unique sense of color to depict the subtropical beauty of Amami Oshima. The building itself is designed to harmonize with the natural surroundings of Amami, utilizing local materials throughout the exhibition rooms. Visitors can trace the artistic evolution of Tanaka through approximately 80 works, spanning his time in Tokyo, Chiba, and finally Amami. It is a space where nature and art merge into a serene, high-quality experience.
Isson Tanaka (1908–1977) led a turbulent life, born in Tochigi Prefecture and attending the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before leaving. After living in Chiba, he moved to Amami Oshima alone at the age of 50. While working as a dyer at a silk fabric factory in Amami, he continued to paint the subtropical birds, plants, and landscapes that define the region. The unique worldview he established is a precious legacy of modern Japanese art. This memorial museum was opened in 2001 to honor his significant achievements.
The greatest attraction is the permanent collection of Isson Tanaka's works. The exhibition content is rotated approximately four times a year, presenting works from his Tokyo, Chiba, and Amami periods to showcase his changing artistic styles. The vivid depictions of tropical birds and plants, rendered with delicate brushwork, are truly breathtaking. Additionally, the special exhibition room often hosts events focused on the culture and nature of Amami.
The museum presents a different face with each season. Since many works are themed around Amami's nature, visiting during a season of change allows for a deeper connection to the art. During the summer (July–August), the museum extends its hours until 19:00, allowing you to enjoy the art in a calm, twilight atmosphere. During the bright daylight hours, you can enjoy the lush greenery through the glass-walled lounge and cafe space.
Beyond just viewing art, visitors can experience a cultural journey through the life of Isson Tanaka. Through the exhibits, you can understand how he confronted the nature of Amami to establish his unique style. The museum also offers engaging content like the 'Isson Tanaka Memorial Museum 4-Panel Theater,' which provides a visual and easy-to-understand introduction to his life and works.

As the museum is a quiet space, visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately for a calm atmosphere. To protect the artworks, please store hats and large bags in the designated areas. Photography restrictions vary by exhibition area, so please check the local instructions. Payments can be made via cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. Residents of Kagoshima Prefecture aged 70 and older may receive free admission upon presenting valid identification.
