Tagi Beach, also known as Kirara Beach, is a stunning seaside destination located adjacent to 'Michi-no-Eki Kirara Taki' in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. As you descend the stairs from the roadside station toward the sea, a breathtaking expanse of cobalt blue water unfolds before your eyes. The beach is highly regarded for both its natural beauty and its excellent amenities. Most notably, it is celebrated for its spectacular sunsets over the Sea of Japan, a view officially selected as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Sunsets.' The coastline features a shallow seabed, making it a safe and ideal environment for families with children to enjoy swimming and water activities during the summer season.
This area has long been blessed with the rich natural environment of the Sea of Japan. With the development of the 'Kirara Taki' area, it has evolved from a simple natural coastline into a multi-faceted resort destination that integrates tourism, leisure, food, and hot springs. Centered around the local 'Michi-no-Eki' (roadside station), a unique culture has been formed where visitors can simultaneously enjoy the natural landscape, the magnificent sunsets, and the delicious local cuisine of the Shimane region.
The greatest highlight of Tagi Beach is undoubtedly the scenery at dusk. The moment the sky and sea are dyed in deep crimson and orange is a truly majestic sight. For safety, the beach is monitored by lifesavers, ensuring a secure environment for swimmers. Additionally, the beach offers various facilities to enhance your stay, such as 'Sanshiki-seki' (reserved seating areas) for relaxing and 'Umi-no-Ie' (beach huts) where you can enjoy light meals. The contrast between the cobalt blue sea and the bright blue sky provides a perfect backdrop for photography enthusiasts.
The peak season for swimming is from mid-July through the Obon holiday period in August. During this time, the contrast between the bright blue sky and the sea is exceptionally beautiful, making it perfect for active leisure. However, the most recommended time to visit is in the late afternoon. By timing your visit with the sunset, you can experience the dramatic transformation of the sky into shades of orange and crimson. For those seeking a more peaceful experience, visiting in the early morning offers a calmer sea and fewer crowds.
The 'Umi-no-Ie' beach huts, which operate during the summer season, serve delicious light meals such as yakisoba and shaved ice. Beach umbrellas are also available for rent, allowing you to relax while staying out of the sun. For those seeking more comfort, the reserved seating areas (Sanshiki-seki) are highly recommended; one section can accommodate 5 to 6 adults. Beyond swimming, the area offers a variety of outdoor experiences, including nearby hot springs, camping, and barbecues, making it a comprehensive outdoor destination.
Located directly above the beach is 'Michi-no-Eki Kirara Taki,' which provides various restaurants serving local ingredients, as well as shopping and rest areas. Nearby, you can also find 'Ichijiku Onsen' (Fig Hot Spring), allowing you to refresh yourself in warm waters after a day at the beach. The area is also equipped with cottages and an auto-campground, making it a very convenient base for those planning a full-scale outdoor adventure or overnight stay.
When enjoying the beach, the basics include swimwear, sandals, a change of clothes, and sunscreen. The beach is equipped with warm showers (for a fee), so it is convenient to have your gear ready. There is a free parking lot for approximately 230 cars located on the east side of the Michi-no-Eki. Please note that the area can get crowded during the summer. It is also recommended to locate the life-saving equipment/floats on the beach for safety. When using local facilities, please ensure you have cash prepared for smooth transactions.
