Takamori-dono no Sugi is a massive, historic cedar tree located in Takomori Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. This site is renowned as a place deeply connected to Takamori Iyo-no-kami Koreori, the lord who ruled the Takamori area during the Sengoki (Warring States) period. The surrounding quiet atmosphere and the sight of the cedar stretching straight toward the heavens provide visitors with an overwhelming sense of presence and awe.
The name "Takamori-dono" refers to the lord of the Takomori area during the Sengoku period, Takamori Iyo-no-kami Koreori. According to history, in the 14th year of Tensho (1586), following a fierce battle with the Shimazu army from Satsuma, he committed seppuku (ritual suicide) under this very cedar tree along with his retainer, Mimori Hyogo Yoshikazu. This significant event gave the tree its name. The age of the tree is estimated to be between 400 and 1,000 years, suggesting it was already a massive tree even during that era. While it once served as the burial site for Iyo-no-kami and others, the remains were later moved by vassals. Currently, a memorial tower for Mimori Hyogo is enshrined beneath the tree.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the colossal cedar tree itself. The trunk, which has recorded hundreds of years of time, is incredibly thick, allowing visitors to visually grasp its immense life force. Near the base of the tree, you can find a memorial tower, offering a tangible connection to fragments of history. The ability to experience a unique space created by this giant tree within a serene environment is a distinguishing feature compared to other tourist spots.
