Tashimagahara (Sakuso Park) is a vast 4.1-hectare grassland located along the Arakawa River in Sakura Ward, Saitama City. The greatest allure of this site is that it serves as a natural habitat for the Primula sieboldii (Sakuraso), which is designated as a National Special Natural Monument. Because the natural ecosystem is strictly preserved, visitors can enjoy a truly precious landscape where delicate pink flowers dot the vast greenery every spring.
This area is far more than just a park; it is a site of immense scientific and cultural value, designated as a National Special Natural Monument. In addition to the Primula sieboldi, it hosts approximately 250 species of wild plants, such as the Japanese elderberry. This biodiversity has been protected through long-standing conservation efforts. The site maintains a cultural value rooted in respecting natural cycles and minimizing artificial development.
The highlight of the season is the blooming of the Primula sieboldii from late March to late April. Rather than a dense carpet, the flowers appear scattered naturally across the field, a sight that is considered highly rare and beautiful. The vast grassland offers a harmonious landscape that changes with the seasons, allowing visitors to observe the shifting beauty of various wild plants throughout the year.
The best time to visit is from late March to late April when the Primula sieboldii is in full bloom. Specifically, the "Sakuraso Matsuri" (Sakura Flower Festival) is held in mid-April, making it a perfect time for a visit. The observation paths are accessible from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to see the vibrant pink blossoms clearly under the bright sunlight.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the area using the well-maintained observation paths to observe the natural ecosystem. However, to protect the National Special Natural Monument, entering any area outside the designated paths is strictly prohibited. It is a place to experience the quiet strength of nature and the serenity of the wild.
Tashimagahara is situated on the banks of the Arakawa River, surrounded by large green spaces like Akigase Park. It is easily accessible from the Urawa area of Saitama City, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing nature walk or a light hike.
As this is a protected natural area, strict adherence to rules is required. Collecting plants or wildlife is strictly forbidden, and entering or climbing on the fences is prohibited. If you wish to use a camera tripod, you must keep it outside the fenced areas. Please note that there are no shops or restaurants within the park, so please bring your own beverages. There are two vending machines available on-site for convenience.
