Jigokunuma is a highly mystical and unique pond located at the foot of the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori Prefecture. It is a volcanic crater formed by an explosion approximately 800 years ago, covering an area of about 4,500 m². Its most striking feature is the emerald green water surface and the sulfurous gases rising from it. Surrounding the pond, one can see various vents that remind visitors of active volcanic processes, where highly acidic hot water bubbles up amidst the scent of sulfur. It is a place where you can directly feel the raw energy of the Earth, characterized by a coexistence of rugged natural power and serene beauty.
The topography of this area was shaped by the volcanic activity of the Hakkoda Mountains during the Quaternary period. Born from an explosion roughly 800 years ago, the pond serves as a living testament to ongoing volcanic energy. The area is also home to a cultural side, with 33 Kannon statues enshrined to pray for the safety of all living things in the Hakkoda region. Furthermore, local traditions like "Manju-fukashi" (a method of using wooden boxes to warm the lower body) reflect the deep-rooted connection between the local people, their spiritual beliefs, and the natural environment.
The greatest charm of Jigokunuma lies in its "color" and "texture." Under a clear sky, the contrast between the shimmering emerald green water and the lush surrounding greenery or autumn foliage is breathtaking. Visitors can enjoy the sight of sulfurous gases rising and the desolate beauty of landscapes where sulfur moss grows. Because the water is highly acidic, no fish can survive, which contributes to its incredible clarity and unique texture. Observing how the scenery changes with the seasons and the shifting light is a highlight of any visit.
