Koryuji Temple is hosting a special public display of the 'Shakanihanzu' (Shaka Nirvana Painting), a precious cultural treasure of Hakodate. This exhibition is a landmark event celebrating the completion of the restoration of this Hokkaido-designated cultural property. The centerpiece is a pair of massive hanging scrolls painted by Kakiaki Hakyo, who served as a high-ranking official (Karo) of the Matsumae Clan and was also a renowned painter. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to view these grand works, measuring approximately 3 meters in height and 1.4 meters in width, up close.
Koryuji is recognized as one of the most historic temples in the Hakodate area. The 'Shakanihanzu' on display symbolizes the culture of the early Edo period and is officially registered as a Hokkaido-designated cultural property. The artist, Kakiaki Hakyo, was a significant figure who balanced his political duties in the Matsumae Clan with his talent as a master painter. After a long period of preservation, this cultural treasure has been revealed once again following a meticulous restoration process funded through crowdfunding. This special event is a limited-time exhibition held from April 1st to April 15th, 2025. April is a beautiful time in the Hakodate area as the first signs of spring arrive. The viewing hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (closing at 4:30 PM). We recommend visiting in the early morning to enjoy a more tranquil and contemplative atmosphere.
