The Shuju Raiko Neri Kuyo-esiki is a traditional Buddhist ceremony held at Taima-dera Temple in Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture, to reenact the moment Lady Chojo ascended to the Pure Land. The origins of this ritual lie in the legend of the Taima Mandala and Lady Chujo. Lady Chujo is believed to have achieved enlightenment while still in her physical body, and the purpose of this ceremony is to recreate her journey toward the Western Pure Land. The tradition is said to have begun as early as the mid-Heian period, maintaining a long history in the Yamato region. Originally held on the 14th day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar, it is now observed on April 14th following the calendar reforms of the Meiji era. The complex history of Taima-dera, which blends elements of both Jodo and Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, further enriches the background of this ritual.
The most captivating moment occurs on the "Raigo Bridge," which connects the Main Hall (Mandara-do) and the Shaba-do of Taima-dera. The sight of performers in magnificent, ornate costumes moving slowly across the bridge is an iconic scene. The presence of figures adorned in golden decorations and colorful attire, leading the sacred procession, imparts a profound sense of historical weight.
