Rokkakudo Chohotsuji is a Tendai sect temple located in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. Most commonly known simply as "Rokkakudo," its most striking feature is the main hall, which is built in a hexagonal shape. The temple holds high prestige as the birthplace of Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement. The head priest of the Ikenobo school, the most prominent authority in Ikebana, resides here, ensuring that the spirit of flower offerings to the Buddha is preserved and passed down through generations. It is also a vital sacred site for pilgrims, serving as the 18th station of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and the 1st station of the Rakuyo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
The history of this temple traces back to the Asuka period. Legend says the Nyoirin Kannon statue was brought to this land by Prince Shotoku, who established the temple to pray for victory.
