Located in Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Chizu-ji is a historic temple known as the ancestral temple of the Imagawa clan, a powerful family during the Sengoku period. The most unique feature of this temple is its nature as a place of ascetic practice, which means much of its inner sanctum is usually closed to the public. The deep, tranquil spaces of the temple grounds are opened to the general public only twice a year on specific dates. This offers a rare chance to witness the Main Hall, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and the exquisite garden, which is a designated National Scenic Spot from the Azuchi-Momoyama period, symbolizing the profound historical value of Japan.
Chizu-ji was founded by Imagawa Nobuchika. Despite enduring the turbulent eras of Takeda Shingen and the rise of the Tokugawa, the temple has preserved its history through the centuries. It is particularly famous as the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu, during his time as a hostage, received the teachings of the eminent monk Taigen Sessai and devoted himself to study. As a site connected to many pivotal historical figures during Japan's great transitions, it is an essential part of Shizuoka's history. It also served as the ancestral temple for the Imagawa clan.
The greatest attraction is the chance to see the architecture and gardens that are normally off-limits. The Main Hall is a National Important Cultural Property that preserves the architectural style of the early Edo period. Additionally, the garden, designed during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is a designated National Scenic Spot. Chizu-ji is not open to the public year-round. It is open only twice a year: May 19th (the anniversary of the death of Imagawa Yoshimoto) and October 15th (to coincide with the Marishiten prayer festival). Visiting on these specific dates is a prerequisite to truly experiencing the depth of the temple grounds. The typical visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
