Isuzuimi Limestone Cave is a captivating limestone cave located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. It was formed by the waters of Kissa-sawa, flowing from the southwestern slope of Mount Otone, infiltrating the underground. The cave features three distinct routes: Course A, B, and C. Each course offers a different level of intensity based on the distance traveled, water depth, temperature, and lighting. This variety allows visitors to choose an experience that matches their adventure spirit, from a light stroll to a deep, dark exploration.
Discovered on August 25, 1927, the cave was formerly known as "Takine Fudo Cave." The region is characterized by the 'Sendai Plain' karst topography, where the landscape has been sculpted by the erosion and weathering of limestone. It is a vital part of the 'Abukuma Cave System,' a geological marvel shaped by the water sources flowing from the south of Mount Otone.
The cave follows a single-path structure that branches out depending on how far you venture. Course A covers approximately 150m, Course B reaches about 600m, and Course C extends to 900m. As you progress beyond Course B, the lighting becomes minimal and the water temperature drops to around 10°C, making proper preparation essential. In certain sections, the water depth can reach above the knees of an adult male.
The accessibility of Isuzuimi Limestone Cave is highly dependent on weather conditions. Following heavy rainfall, water levels inside the cave may rise, which can lead to temporary closures for safety. Depending on the season, even Course A may experience higher water levels. It is highly recommended to visit during periods of stable weather to ensure a smooth exploration experience.
Depending on the course chosen, you can enjoy different levels of exploration. While Course A can be enjoyed in regular clothing, Courses B and C require preparation for getting wet. For Course B, it is highly recommended to bring a headlamp, waterproof handheld light, a change of clothes, and extra footwear. Course C is strictly by reservation and must be explored accompanied by a professional guide.
The area around Isuzuimi Limestone Cave is home to other notable natural sites such as Abukuma Cave and the Hoshi no Mura Observatory, all of which are part of the same geological water source system.
