Notojima is an island located in Nao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, floating beautifully in Nao Bay. In June 2011, its cultural landscapes centered around agriculture and fishing were officially recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. Access to the island is provided via two iconic bridges: the 1,050-meter-long Notojima Bridge and the 620-meter-long Twin Bridge (Naka Noto Agricultural Road Bridge). The island is dotted with diverse recreational facilities, including the Notojima Aquarium, the Ishikawa Prefectural Notojima Glass Art Museum, hot spring facilities, golf courses, and campsites.
Notojima has a long history of living in harmony with the sea. The opening of the Notojima Bridge in 1982 strengthened the connection with the nearby Wakura Onsen district, and the completion of the Twin Bridge in 1999 further improved land access. Following a merger in 2004, it became part of Nao City. The local agricultural and fishing practices are deeply rooted in the region and hold significant value as a World Agricultural Heritage site, shaping the traditional landscape. A notable cultural event is the 'Notojima Mukoda Fire Festival,' one of the region's most striking traditional festivals, held annually on the last Saturday of July.
