Nikko Edomura Edo Wonderland is a unique theme park located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, themed around the Edo and Sengoku periods. Spanning a vast area of approximately 495,000 square meters, the park meticulously recreates the atmosphere of old Japan. The park is divided into eight distinct areas: Kaido (Highways), Merchant Town, Craftsman Town, Inn Town, Theater District, Samurai Town, Ninja Village, and the Filming Village. Each area offers a unique way to experience history. The sets are so authentic that they are frequently used as filming locations for Japanese television dramas and movies.
Opened on April 23, 1986, the park blends the culture of the Edo period with elements of the Sengoku (Warring States) era. It became widely recognized in the 1990s through its clever marketing featuring "Nyanmage," a cat character wearing a traditional Japanese topknot (mage). The facilities and sets serve as a visual gateway to understanding the lifestyles, architecture, and cultural nuances of Japan's past.
A highlight of the park is the Great Ninja Theater and other outdoor stages, where high-energy performances featuring legendary figures like Sanada Yukimura or ninja-themed stunts take place. Walking through the reconstructed streets allows you to feel as though you have stepped back in time. Please note that the "Filming Village" is a professional open-set studio for movies and TV, which is not accessible to general visitors.
Operating hours vary by season. During the Summer Season (March 20 – November 30), the park is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the Winter Season (December 1 – March 19), it is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For those looking for a budget-friendly or shorter visit, "Afternoon Tickets" are available. In the Summer, these allow entry after 2:00 PM, and in the Winter, after 1:00 PM. The atmosphere of the park changes beautifully with the seasons, making every visit unique.
Visitors can engage in various activities, such as trying out Edo-period vocational roles or participating in ninja-related challenges. After the excitement, you can relax by enjoying traditional Edo-style meals like Soba (buckwheat noodles), Udon, or Bento boxes, providing a multi-sensory way to experience Japanese culture.
Nikko Edomura is located in the Kinugawa Onsen area of Nikko, Tochigi. It is a perfect addition to a sightseeing itinerary that includes famous sites like the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The nearest station is Kinugawa Onsen Station.
