Nijinomatsubara is a massive pine forest spreading along the coast of Karatsu Bay in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Known as one of Japan's three great pine groves, it is officially designated as a National Special Scenic Spot. The sight of approximately 1 million black pine trees stretching about 4.5km in length and 500m in width in a graceful arc is truly a masterpiece of nature. This landscape symbolizes the classic Japanese aesthetic of 'white sand and green pines,' offering a unique atmosphere where the coastline and the forest harmonize perfectly.
The history of this pine grove is deeply connected to the Karatsu Domain during the Edo period. The trees were originally planted as part of land development to serve as windbreaks and sand protection. During the domain era, strict management was implemented to protect the precious pine trees. Furthermore, the area is steeped in local lore, including the legends known as the 'Seven Wonders of Nijinomatsubara,' which add a layer of cultural depth to the landscape. Today, it is continuously preserved as a natural scenic spot and has been selected as one of Japan's '100 Best Fragrant Landscapes.'
