Nezame no Toko is a renowned scenic spot located in Agematsu Town, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture, recognized as one of the five great gorges in Japan. As a nationally designated place of scenic beauty, it features a unique natural landscape formed by the long-term erosion of granite by the Koso River. The exposed white granite rock formations create a striking and distinctive view alongside the flowing river.
While this area was once a site of rapid currents, changes in water levels due to dam operations have left the beautiful rock formations exposed above the surface. These geological structures consist of coarse-grained biotite granite from the Mesozoic era, allowing visitors to feel the immense power of nature up close.
The area holds deep cultural significance, having been immortalized in poetry by many poets throughout history. Its fame is so well-established that the name of this area even appears in the fourth verse of the Nagano Prefecture anthem, "Shinano no Kuni."
Furthermore, the area is steeped in the legend of Urashima Taro. The name and atmosphere of the site are closely linked to the tale of Urashima, who underwent a transformation after opening a mysterious box brought back from the Dragon Palace. The Urashima-do shrine located in the center is said to have once housed a statue of Benzaiten, and its connection to the nearby Rinzen-ji Temple continues to be passed down through generations. Even the official mascot of Agematsu Town is inspired by this legend.
The greatest highlight is the breathtaking view created by the combination of the crystal-clear Kiso River and the massive, exposed granite rock walls. The vertical cliffs and layered structures of the rock faces represent the pinnacle of natural sculptural beauty.
Additionally, you can enjoy this spectacular view from the window of a train passing on the JR Chuo Main Line. Some express trains, such as the "Shinano," may even slow down to allow passengers to fully appreciate the scenery, making it a perfect view to enjoy during a rail journey.
Nezame no Toko reveals a different face in every season. From spring to summer, the mountains are wrapped in deep greenery, and the river flows beautifully. In autumn, the surrounding foliage adds vibrant colors to the white rock faces.
In winter, the scenery becomes particularly serene, with snow and ice blending into the landscape, creating a quiet and beautiful view often captured in New Year's postcards.
