Negoro-ji (Negoroji) is the 82nd temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is a temple of the Tendai school and is situated halfway up Mt. Aomi, the main peak of the Shichidai mountain range. This site is a highly prestigious sacred place, believed to have been identified by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) as an ideal location for esoteric Buddhist training. The name of the temple originates from the fragrant sacred wood that once existed here, allowing visitors to feel the refreshing air and the weight of history. It is a place where natural scenery and deep history merge to provide spiritual tranquility.
The history of the temple dates back to the era of Kobo Daishi (Kukai). It is said that during the Konyin era (810–824), Kukai visited this area and perceived the Five Wisdom Buddhas of the Diamond Realm within the five peaks of Shichidai. Kukai identified this area as a suitable plateau for esoteric training and established "Kazo-in" on Mt. Aomi to enshrine the Five Great Wisdom Kings. Later, in 832, Chisho Daishi (Enchin) visited the site and, following instructions from the deity of the mountain, used fragrant wood to carve a statue of Kannon, establishing "Senju-in." The scent from this wood is said to be the origin of the name "Negoro-ji." Although the temple suffered during historical conflicts, it was restored by Matsudaira Yorishige, the first lord of the Takamatsu Domain. Today, it continues to be preserved as a significant Tendai Buddhist temple.
The temple grounds are dotted with various historical buildings and stone statues. The main deity is the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva, and visitors can view a secret Buddha statue that is exhibited only once every 33 years at the main hall. Other significant sites include the Sanmon (Nio Gate), the main hall reached via stone steps, the Daishi Hall enshrining the statue of Kobo Daishi, and the Godai-do Hall. Visitors can also encounter local legends through stone statues and hanging scrolls related to the "Ushi-oni" (ox-demon) legend. Additionally, the site of the legendary 1,600-year-old "Hakko-keyaki" tree serves as a testament to the long history of this land.
Negoro-ji reveals different faces depending on the season. It is particularly famous as a premier autumn foliage spot (late October to November), where vibrant colors decorate the temple grounds. Because of this, many visitors arrive during this period, and crowds are expected. The temple is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting in the early morning allows you to experience the most serene and refreshing atmosphere. Please note that during the peak autumn season, parking lots may become crowded and surrounding roads may experience traffic, so we recommend allowing extra time for your journey.
Here, you can truly feel the culture of the Shikoku Henro (pilgrimage). As the 82nd temple, you can experience the atmosphere of a place where pilgrims walk the path of spiritual training. You can also explore local folklore through exhibits and statues related to the "Ushi-oni" legend.
