Nawagaike is a natural lake located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters in the mountains of Mt. Takashimizu, in the eastern part of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. Despite having no significant inflow rivers, the pond remains constantly filled due to the abundant spring water from Mt. Takashimizu. Surrounded by primeval forests on three sides, the area is filled with natural serenity and vitality. It is known as a place of exceptional natural beauty, once visited by the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
The pond is steeped in an intriguing "Dragon God Legend." It is said that when the warrior Taira no Taira (a figure from the Genpei era) crossed a bridge in Omi Province, the Dragon God was moved by his courage and bestowed a gift to alleviate water shortages. According to the legend, after people prayed by digging a hole in the mountains, water began to gush out overnight, leading to the name "Nawagaike."
Furthermore, the pond is deeply connected to local life. Every year on July 15th, a ritual is held by representatives from the Minoya and Kitano districts, which use the pond as a source of irrigation water. This tradition of offering sacred food to the Nawagaike Hime Shrine is still carefully preserved as a way to express gratitude for nature's blessings.
The greatest attraction is the colony of Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho) spreading across the wetlands surrounding the pond. The Skunk Cabbage is a northern plant, and this area is considered the southwestern limit of its natural habitat. In May, the sight of the white flowers blooming in mass is truly breathtaking. The reflection of the fresh green trees on the calm lake surface is a masterpiece of nature. There are also well-maintained wooden paths (boardwalks) around the pond, allowing visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll while observing local flora.
The best time to visit is May, during the blooming season of the Skunk Cabbage. This is when the vitality of the plants and the fresh greenery are at their peak, making it ideal for photography and nature observation. The summer season is also beautiful, with a stunning gradation of green reflected on the water. Since this is a destination for enjoying natural scenery, visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended to see the most beautiful views.
The main activities here are nature observation and hiking, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Walking along the maintained boardwalks, you can experience the ecosystem of the primeval forest and the natural monument, the Skunk Cabbage, up close. A stroll through this legendary landscape offers a profound experience beyond a simple walk. It is suitable for families and landscape photographers.
There are several other spots near Nawagaike where you can feel the abundance of water and nature. For example, the "Meoto Taki" (Married Couple Falls) features two parallel waterfalls that change in thickness depending on the season, showcasing the dynamism of nature. You can also explore various other ponds and spring water spots in Nanto City as part of a larger nature-themed route.
As this is a natural area, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are essential. Please be careful when walking on the boardwalks in wetland areas. Since temperatures can fluctuate depending on the season, bring layers. To protect the environment, please take all your trash home and avoid damaging plants or the surroundings. While there are no specific facilities for payment nearby, please follow basic outdoor etiquette to enjoy your visit.
