Nagatoro Castle is a mountain fortress located in Minakami Town, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture, characterized by its unique status as a natural stronghold. Situated near the confluence of the Tone and Akaya Rivers, the castle was built utilizing the rugged terrain of steep cliffs on three sides for defense. Its origins date back to a residence built during the Muromachi period, and it later became a crucial strategic base during pivotal historical shifts. Today, it is a designated historical site of the prefecture, where visitors can still see the original structures of the Honkaku (Main Enclosure) and Ni-no-kaku (Second Enclosure).
The history of this site began when the Nagatoro clan established a residence during the Muromachi period. It later evolved into a vital frontline base following significant events in the Tensho era. The castle is historically famous for its role in the context of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara campaign, symbolizing the strategic importance of such locations during Japan's Sengoku (Warring States) period. Efforts continue to preserve and maintain the site to pass down its profound historical value to future generations.
The castle follows a 'Renkaku-shiki' (connected enclosure) style, where the structure progresses from the Umadashi to the San-kaku, Ni-kaku, Honkaku, and Sasa-kaku. In the center of the Honkaku, a stone monument stands as a testament to its long history. From the Sasa-kaku enclosure, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, providing a visual understanding of how the natural terrain was used for defense. The well-maintained paths and traces of earthen walls (dorui) are precious archaeological remains that showcase ancient Japanese fortification techniques.
It is best to visit the Nagatoro Castle Ruins Information Center during daylight hours throughout the year. If you wish to participate in a guided tour, it is highly recommended to check the operating hours of the information center in advance. Because the site is surrounded by rich natural scenery, you can enjoy the changing seasonal views while exploring the remains of the ancient fortress.
Visitors can enjoy guided tours led by local history volunteers. Through the information center, you can gain much deeper insights into the historical background of the site. Additionally, you can purchase a 'Goshuin' (a commemorative seal/stamp) as a proof of your visit. There are two types available: a traditional Washi paper type and a wooden type, each offering a different texture and aesthetic. These are sold exclusively on-site and serve as a wonderful souvenir of your historical journey.
Minakami Town offers many other natural and historical attractions. The area is home to the majestic Mt. Tanigawa, various hot spring villages (Minakami Onsen-kyo), and beautiful valleys and dams. You can easily combine a visit to the castle with a tour of the surrounding scenic spots. Access from Gokan Station is also a practical option for travelers.
