Choseiji is a prominent temple of the Nichiren sect located in Takiya-cho, Haiki City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Known as Kin'eizan, it is celebrated for possessing the most magnificent and grand scale of temple architecture in the Noto region. The temple grounds are home to numerous structures designated as National Important Cultural Properties, including the Main Hall (Hondo), the Five-story Pagoda, the Soshido (Ancestral Hall), Kyodo (Sutra Hall), Bell Tower, and the Nio-mon (Two Kings Gate). These architectural treasures are profound historical legacies deeply connected to the prestigious Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain.
The history of Choseiji traces back to its founder, Nichojo, a disciple of the great monk Nichiren. In 1294, during the Nin'nin era, Nichojo traveled from Sado to Nanao, where he met Nichojo and established the temple in the Noto region. During the early modern period, the temple received immense patronage from the Maeda clan, the rulers of the Kaga Domain. In particular, Jufukuin—the wife of Maeda Toshiie and the mother of the third Maeda lord, Toshiyasu—designated this site as her memorial place and oversaw the development of the Main Hall and other structures. This support solidified Choseiji's status as a vital center for the culture and spiritual life of the Kaga Million Koku era.
The temple grounds are dotted with structures of immense historical value. A representative landmark is the Five-story Pagoda, built in 1618. This pagoda utilizes a specialized construction method designed to withstand earthquakes and the harsh seasonal winds of the Sea of Japan coast, making it a masterpiece of Edo-period architecture. Other significant treasures include the Main Hall, built in 1604, and the Shoin (study hall), built in 1659. These sites offer a rare glimpse into the advanced architectural techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of the time. Additionally, the Nio-mon gate, the Bell Tower, and the Sankodo hall all contribute to the breathtaking and solemn historical landscape of the temple.
Choseiji reveals a different face with each season. The temple gates are open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM in the summer, and until 4:30 PM during the winter season. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the Five-story Pagoda, the Main Hall, and the elegant Shoin garden. The harmony between the architecture and the surrounding nature is most striking during the day, offering a perfect time for quiet contemplation.

The location is relatively easy to access, making it a great stop when combining your visit with other sightseeing spots in the Noto Peninsula.
As the temple grounds consist of historic buildings and delicate gardens, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Free parking is available on-site.
