Morito Shrine (Morito Daimyojin) is a harmonious blend of history and nature located in Hayama, Miura District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Situated near the coastline, it has long been revered as a place of worship that protects the local community. With its deep historical ties to the legendary Minamoto no Yoriotmo, the shrine is a significant spiritual site where people today come to pray for blessings such as fertility, easy childbirth, and infant blessings (Omiyamairi).
The history of the main shrine dates back to 1180 (Jisho 4). It is said to have been founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, who invited the spirit of Mishima Myojin from the Mishima Grand Shrine in Shizuoka. Yoritomo established a foundation for the Kamakura Shogunate here through his deep devotion to Mishima Myojin. Since then, it has been visited by successive Shoguns and served as an important prayer site for the Miura clan. The grounds also feature monuments honoring figures who helped establish Hayama as a resort area in the early Meiji era, linking the site to modern Japanese history.
The shrine grounds are dotted with many historical monuments and cultural assets. A must-see is the "Morito Daimyojin Byakushin," a natural monument designated by Hayama Town, as well as the ancient "Sengankatsu" tree associated with Yoritomo and Wada Yoshimori. You will also find monuments honoring Dr. Berthelot and Minister Martino, who helped promote Hayama as a seaside resort during the Meiji era. Additionally, various poetry monuments left by famous poets and historical figures allow visitors to feel different facets of history with every visit.
Morito Shrine reveals a different face in every season. The location near the coast makes it a perfect spot for a stroll when you can feel the refreshing sea breeze. During the New Year's season (Hatsumode), the shrine becomes vibrant with many worshippers, offering a chance to experience the traditional Japanese atmosphere of a new beginning. Visit during the day to enjoy the sunlight on the stone monuments and ancient trees, or visit in the late afternoon to experience the tranquil, peaceful atmosphere near the sea.
