Monjuin Nishi Kofun is an ancient burial mound located within the precincts of Abe Monjuin in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture. The most striking feature of this site is its lateral-entry stone chamber (yokoana-shiki sekishitsu). The chamber is constructed using incredibly precise cut stones, showcasing the advanced masonry skills of the era. With a total length of approximately 12.5 meters, the chamber has a long history; records indicate it had already been opened during the Muromachi period. Today, it serves a unique spiritual role, as a statue of Fudo Myoo (Acala) is enshrined within the inner chamber, blending ancient funerary architecture with religious devotion.
This kofun (burial mound) is believed to have been constructed around the 7th century. While there are various theories regarding the identity of the person buried here, one prominent hypothesis suggests it may be the tomb of Abe no Kurahishimaro, a high-ranking official (Left Minister) from the Asuka period. However, this remains a historical theory rather than a confirmed fact. The fact that the stone chamber was opened as early as the Murommachi period adds another layer to its long history. The presence of the nearby Higashi Kofun, which also features a 13-meter lateral-entry chamber, highlights that this region was a significant historical and cultural hub in ancient Japan.
The primary attraction is the structural mastery of the lateral-entry stone chamber and its masonry. The way the highly refined cut stones are assembled allows visitors to observe the sophisticated stone-working technology of ancient Japan. Furthermore, the presence of the Fudo Myoo statue inside the chamber creates a unique space where ancient tomb architecture meets spiritual worship. Standing before the 12.5-meter-long chamber, you can truly feel the grand scale and historical weight of the site.
Since Monjuin Nishi Kofun is located within the Abe Monjuin temple grounds, most visitors combine their visit with temple worship. While the site can be visited in any season, we recommend visiting during daylight hours. The bright, natural light makes it much easier to appreciate the fine details of the stone textures and the intricate way the stones are fitted together. The surrounding environment is exceptionally quiet, offering a perfect atmosphere for contemplating history.

Studying the way the cut stones are combined is an excellent way to understand the fundamental elements of Japanese kofun culture. The surrounding landscape is dotted with numerous other kofun and historical sites, making it a perfect addition to a historical trekking route through Nara. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the Abe Monjuin precincts while absorbing the ancient atmosphere of the region.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain around the kofun and temple grounds can be uneven. As the site is part of a religious complex (Abe Monjuin), please maintain respectful behavior and observe local etiquette. Please note that visiting the main temple hall (Hondo) may require a fee (for junior high students and above). Since English signage may be limited, it is helpful to check information in advance. Cash (JPY) is required for temple offerings or hall admissions.
