"Monet's Garden Marmottan," located in Kitagawa Village, Kochi Prefecture, is a garden designed to recreate and inherit the world of the great Impressionist master, Claude Monet. The garden is filled with plants that add different colors to the landscape each season, welcoming visitors with breathtaking views. A truly unique feature is that the ticket stub from this garden can be used as an admission ticket for the original "Monet's Garden" in Giverny, France, a connection rarely seen anywhere else in the world.
This garden was born through the passion of Mr. Ugge Garl, the former chairman of the Claude Monet Foundation in France, and was established in Kitagawa Village, Kochi. Based on the philosophy that Monet integrated art into every aspect of his life—from garden design to table settings and tableware—this site is more than just a botanical garden; it is a place to experience an artistic lifestyle. The core of this location is the seamless fusion of nature and art.
The greatest charm of the garden lies in the water lilies floating on the surface and the vibrant, colorful plants surrounding them. Depending on the season, you can see a variety of flowers in white, blue, purple, and pink, offering a different expression every time you visit. Additionally, at the cafe "Monet's House," you can enjoy seasonal cuisine and menus inspired by recipes that Monet himself might have appreciated, all while soaking in the beautiful garden scenery.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, the seasons when the plants are in full bloom offer particularly photogenic and striking views. The garden is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). We recommend strolling through the garden during the soft light of the morning or the gentle light of the afternoon. Please note that from May to October, water lily maintenance is performed on Tuesdays, which may change the appearance of the water areas.
Beyond a simple stroll, enjoying tea time at "Monet's House" is a quintessential experience. The cafe offers seasonal dishes, desserts, and even craft beers or sparkling beverages, allowing you to enjoy dining alongside the scenery. The site also features a gallery, a shop, and a handmade workshop, where you can touch upon the lifestyle of integrating art into daily living.
The surrounding Kitagawa Village area offers other cultural spots, such as the Nakao Shintaro Museum, where you can learn about local history. While the location is a drive or bus ride away from major cities like Kochi City, its rich natural environment makes it an excellent destination for road trips or scenic drives.
As the garden is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Payments can be made via credit cards and various mobile/QR code payment methods. If you plan to use the cafe or shop, we suggest checking availability in advance. Please note that tickets are sold only on the day of your visit and are not available for pre-purchase online. Credit cards and digital payments are accepted for admission fees.
