The Mogami River Bank Thousand Cherry Blossoms is a historic and scenic cherry blossom destination located along the Mogami River in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture. The riverbanks are lined with Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, creating a soft pink landscape that harmonizes beautifully with the flowing river during the spring season. The left bank (city side) features historic cherry trees planted during the Taisho era, while the right bank is also beautifully adorned with blossoms. The characteristic charm of this location lies in the peaceful harmony between the gentle sound of the river and the breathtaking floral scenery.
The cherry trees here carry a rich history tied to their respective planting periods. The trees on the left bank of the Mogapi River were planted in 1915 (Taisho 4) to commemorate the accession of the Emperor, with approximately 300 trees spread across a 2km stretch. The trees on the right bank were planted later, in 1938 (Showa 13). Today, many of these trees have exceeded 100 years of age, and the landscape is carefully preserved as a vital part of the local heritage.
