The Chapel on the Water is a breathtaking chapel located within Hoshino Resorts Tomamu in Shimukappu Village, Hokkaido. Designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the structure is built on the concept of "cutting out" nature. Surrounded by a serene birch forest, the site is divided by a massive L-shaped concrete wall. Stepping through this threshold, visitors enter an extraordinary space that feels completely detached from the mundane world. Elements such as water, light, wind, and greenery are integrated into the architecture, creating a unique atmosphere that envelops the soul.
This architectural masterpiece received the 31st BCS Prize in 1990, marking it as a significant work in modern Japanese architecture. The most striking feature is the chapel's structure. The space, enclosed by glass on four sides, directly reflects the surrounding landscape. At the altar, a shallow pool of water (approximately 15cm deep) holds a floating cross, which appears to shimmer and dance with the movement of light and wind. Additionally, four concrete crosses are positioned on the roof, allowing sunlight to pour through top lights and cast dramatic shadows throughout the interior. The architectural journey—from the approach to the inner sanctuary—is a carefully choreographed experience of expanding vistas.

The morning hours are highly recommended for a "Morning Walk," where you can breathe in the crisp air and listen to the birdsong.
