Minakuchi Castle Ruins is a historical site located in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. It holds a significant place in history as a lodging built for the 3rd Shogun of the Edo Shogunate, Tokugawa Iemitsu, during his visits to Kyoto. Due to its moats fed by natural springs, it was also known as 'Heisui-jo' (Azure Water Castle). Currently, the site features the 'Minakuchi Castle Museum,' which showcases a reconstructed corner turret (sumiyagura) atop stone walls. The sight of the white-walled structure reflecting in the water is an iconic and beautiful landscape of this location.
This site was developed in the early Edo period as a lodging for the Shogun and later became the residence of the Minakuchi Clan, which ruled 25,000 koku. Following the Meiji Restoration, many structures were lost; for instance, the corner turrets were sold to local merchants, and parts of the stone walls were used as paving for the Ohmi Railway. However, in 1972, the site's historical value as a Shogun's lodging was officially recognized, and it was designated as a historical site of Shiga Prefecture. Today, it is carefully preserved as a local symbol.
The museum displays a variety of precious documents and artifacts related to Minakuchi Castle. A particularly notable exhibit is the 'Minakuchi Rapier,' introduced in April 2023. This is a model of a cross-shaped Western sword associated with Kato Yoshiaki, the founder of the Minakuchi domain (one of the 'Seven Spears of Shiga'). The reconstructed corner turret and the moats fed by natural springs provide a vivid visual experience of what the castle once looked like.
Minakuchi Castle Ruins offers different charms depending on the season. In spring, the surrounding area is particularly beautiful as cherry blossoms reach full bloom, coloring the water's edge. The sight of cherry blossoms reflected in the moat is a quintessential Japanese spring scene. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours between 10:00 and 17:00 to enjoy the striking contrast between the white walls and the blue sky.
