Metasequoia Namiki is a breathtaking 2.4km avenue located in Makino Town, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. The path is characterized by approximately 500 metasequoia trees standing in orderly rows on both sides, creating a harmonious view with the distant Mt. Nosaka. This avenue serves as an approach road leading toward the Makino Plateau. Because the landscape changes completely with each season, visitors can enjoy a vastly different experience depending on when they visit.
The history of this avenue began with the fruit producers of Makino Town. It was originally planted as part of a school orchard development project titled "Learning from the Soil of Makino." Since then, the trees have been carefully nurtured by the local community, and the length of the avenue was extended alongside the development of the prefectural road, leading to the magnificent sight seen today. The metasequoia is a deciduous conifer native to China, named for its resemblance to the sequoia tree.

The greatest charm of this location is the shifting colors of the metasequoia trees throughout the year. In spring, the fresh, budding greenery creates a refreshing atmosphere, while in summer, the deep green canopy provides cool shade. Autumn brings the most popular season, where a tunnel of golden and orange leaves appears. In winter, the landscape transforms into a mystical scene covered in white snow, offering a unique beauty that is quite different from the warmer months.
Spring (April–May) is a refreshing season with bright new greenery. Summer (June–August) is a time when the foliage is at its deepest and the shade provides a cool respite. Autumn (mid-November–early December) is the peak season when the golden foliage is most spectacular, attracting many visitors. Winter (January–February) offers a dreamy, ethereal landscape of snow. To avoid crowds, it is highly recommended to visit on weekday mornings.

Along the avenue, you can visit "Makino Pick Land Agricultural Park," where you can enjoy seasonal fruit picking. The surrounding area also features various eateries serving local ingredients and cozy cafes where you can relax while enjoying the view. You can fully immerse yourself in the nature of this area through walking, driving, or experiencing the seasonal fruits.
Near Metasequoia Namiki, you will find the Makino Plateau and Makino Pick Land Agricultural Park. There are also nearby hot spring (onsen) facilities, allowing you to enjoy a relaxing stay amidst nature. While driving is the most common way to travel, access via public transportation is also possible.

When visiting in winter, please prepare non-slip footwear to safely navigate snowy paths. Since the area around the avenue is a residential zone, please drive slowly and be mindful of pedestrians. Parking is available at the Makino Pick Land parking lot. When taking photos, please ensure you do not obstruct passing vehicles or other pedestrians to maintain safety and respect the local community.
