The Meiji Hyakunen Kinen Observatory is a unique observation facility located at the very tip of Cape Futtsu in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture. Completed in 1971, the tower features a distinctive design inspired by the Japanese White Pine (Goyomatsu). The observation deck reaches a height of 21.8 meters, providing an elevated vantage point. Situated within Futtsu Park, the structure harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding natural environment. It is widely recognized as a premier spot for enjoying the panoramic views of Tokyo Bay and has been selected as one of the '100 Best Views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto Region.'
The area around Cape Futtsu holds significant historical weight. During the Meiji and Taisho eras, this region served as a strategic coastal defense area, featuring facilities such as the First and Second Sea Forts (Daiichi and Daiji Kaiho) to protect the capital. While the observatory itself is a more modern structure completed in 1971, it stands as a symbol of the area's historical role in national defense. The choice of the Japanese White Pine as a design motif reflects the deep connection between the local landscape and the natural heritage of the region.
The main attraction is the spectacular view from the 21.8m high observation deck. Visitors can witness the vast horizon of Tokyo Bay, the intricate coastline of the Boso Peninsula, and the rolling hills of the region. On days with high visibility and clear skies, the majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji can be seen clearly in the distance. The surrounding landscape is also a highlight, featuring lush vegetation such as pine trees that blend the sea and land into a seamless natural vista.
Recommended visiting months are May, July, and August. These periods often offer pleasant weather conducive to clear views. On particularly clear days, the chances of spotting Mount Fuji are much higher. Additionally, the golden hour during sunset provides a breathtaking transformation of the landscape, making it a perfect time for photography and quiet contemplation of the changing light over the ocean.
The 360-degree open view from the deck allows visitors to observe the movement of the sea and the surrounding topography. It is an excellent spot for nature observation. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through Futtsu Park alongside the observatory. Furthermore, the adjacent coastal areas are used for marine leisure activities, such as jet skiing, during specific seasons (from May 1st to August 31st), adding a dynamic energy to the area.
Within Futtsu Park, there are several other facilities to enjoy, such as the Nakanoshima Observatory (located on a hill surrounded by a large pond), an outdoor theater, and multi-purpose sports fields. For those traveling by car, parking is available at the tip of Cape Futtsu, making it easily accessible for road trips. The entire area is a wonderful destination for those seeking a peaceful escape into nature.
As the observatory is located on a coastal cape, it can be quite windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or clothing that can protect you from the sea breeze. If you are driving, please use the Futtsu Park No. 3 Parking Lot. Note that there may be restrictions for large buses, so please check in advance. Please respect local environmental rules, such as avoiding driving vehicles onto the beach areas to protect the natural habitats and coastal plants.
