Bokujo no Sakura, located in Hosono, Kobayashi City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is one of the most renowned cherry blossom viewing spots in Southern Kyushu. Approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees line the path, creating a magnificent 'cherry blossom tunnel' where branches arch gracefully from both sides of the road. The scenery is harmoniously blended with nature, featuring the majestic Mount Ikomofuji and the Kirishima mountain range in the background. Historically known as the 'Military Horse Cherry Blossoms,' this site has long captivated visitors with its unique charm.
The history of this area dates back to 1908 with the establishment of the Kobayashi Branch of the National Horse Breeding Station. The planting of cherry trees at the station during that era laid the foundation for the beautiful avenue seen today. In the early Showa era, the approximately 2-kilometer stretch of cherry trees was opened to the public, becoming famous throughout Kyushu as the 'Military Horse Cherry Blossoms.' At its peak, the area was so popular that the Moji Railway Bureau even organized special 'flower viewing trains,' with crowds reaching an estimated 400,000 people. While the name changed to 'Bokujo no Sakura' (Cherry Blossom Farm) after the war, and the festival was once suspended due to the aging of the trees, a revitalization project led by Kobayashi City and local citizens has successfully brought the blossoms back to life since 1988.

The most striking feature is the 2-kilometer-long path of Yoshino cherry trees. At full bloom, the density of the blossoms is so high that they seem to cover the sky, creating a vivid pink tunnel. The contrast between the pink blossoms and the grand mountain ranges of Kirishima and Mount Ikomofuji provides a view unique to this location. Depending on the season, nighttime illuminations are held, offering a mystical and dreamlike atmosphere quite different from the daytime scenery.
The best season is during the full bloom period from March to April. During the day, you can enjoy walking through the vibrant pink tunnel under bright sunlight. At night, the illuminated trees create an impressive sight against the darkness. During the Cherry Blossom Festival, fireworks are often launched into the night sky, making a nighttime visit highly recommended for a spectacular experience.
During the 'Bokujo no Sakura Festival' in spring, various events take place. The 'Sakura Ichiba' (Sakura Market) and food stalls offer a variety of local specialties and delicious street foods. Additionally, special stages feature local performances, including children's dances, Japanese drum (Taiko) performances, brass band music, and traditional dances, providing a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture amidst nature.
The area around the site has a historical atmosphere related to agriculture and livestock breeding, with facilities like the Livestock Improvement Center nearby. It also serves as a beautiful driving route with views of the Kirishima mountain range, allowing you to enjoy the rich natural scenery while traveling.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. Since the area can become crowded during the peak season, please allow plenty of time for your visit.
