Maizuru Nature and Culture Park is a vast, nature-rich park located on the Oura Peninsula in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture. Developed on the former site of the Seibu Farm, the park covers approximately 34.7 hectares of diverse flora. The most unique feature of this park is its "seasonal opening style," where the park is open during specific periods to highlight certain botanical wonders. In spring, you can enjoy rare varieties of camellias; in early summer, the park features a massive hydrangea garden spanning about 2 hectares; and in autumn, it transforms into a vibrant landscape of colorful foliage. Each visit offers a completely different experience depending on the season.
The land was originally used as the Seibu Farm. The site was later acquired by Maizuru City and developed into a center for nature and culture. The park serves as a vital space for both local citizens and tourists to connect with nature while preserving the local ecosystem. It plays a crucial role in protecting the biodiversity of the Oura Peninsula while showcasing the region's natural heritage.
The highlights of the park change with the seasons. From mid-to-late March, the "Camellia Garden" showcases rare and exquisite camellia varieties. From mid-to-late June, the "Hydrangea Garden" becomes a highly photogenic spot, with approximately 100 varieties of hydrangeas blooming across 2 hectares. In November, the "Autumn Foliage Garden" offers a deep, colorful spectacle of changing leaves. These breathtaking views are only available during their respective seasonal opening periods.
The park's opening schedule is strictly tied to the blooming periods of the plants. Key periods include the Camellia season in March, the Hydrangea season in June, and the Autumn Foliage season in November. Please note that the park is generally closed outside of these specific periods, so it is essential to check the official schedule before visiting. To see the plants at their most vibrant, we recommend visiting in the morning during the hydrangea season, when the soft light enhances the colors of the flowers.
With well-maintained walking paths, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through nature. These locations make it easy to plan a comprehensive sightseeing route that combines nature walks with local history.
Since you will be walking along nature trails, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please dress appropriately for the season, as temperatures can fluctuate. Cash is required for admission fees. To protect the environment, please do not pick or damage any plants. Photography is permitted, but please follow all park rules to preserve the natural setting.
