The Old Tsuruga Port Station Building (Tsuruga Railway Museum) is a striking two-story Western-style building characterized by its unique pointed roof. The architecture features a sophisticated contrast of white and deep gray (or black), accented by small dormer windows. This facility serves as a living archive of Tsuruga's railway history, with the 1st and 2nd floors each offering a unique way to experience the past through various exhibits.

Historical & Cultural Background

Completed in November 1882 (Meiji 15) during the construction of the Tsuruga-Nagahama line, this building is one of the oldest railway-related structures in Japan, alongside the former Nagahama Station. The building was donated to Tsuruga City by Japan Freight Railway Company on February 5, 2014. Between 2014 and 2015, extensive restoration work was conducted, including the restoration of the tiled roof and joint repairs, returning the building to its original, majestic appearance.

The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Since exhibits may be rotated periodically, we recommend checking for the latest updates before your visit. Daytime is the best time to appreciate the exterior's Western architectural details and the play of light on the pointed roof.
