Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort is a comprehensive tourism complex located within the Saikai National Park in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It brings together an aquarium, sightseeing boat terminals, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Facing the southern Kujukushima islands, the facility offers diverse leisure experiences centered around the 'Sea Kirara' aquarium, which showcases a wide array of marine life alongside stunning coastal landscapes.
The area is situated in a nature-rich environment as part of the Saikai National Park. The facility began its journey in 1994, grand opening as the 'Saikai Pearl Sea Resort.' On April 1, 2014, it was renamed to its current name, 'Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort.' Today, it is operated and managed by 'Sasebo Pearl Sea,' a third-sector organization under a designated manager system.
The resort features several distinct attractions. First, the 'Sea Kirara' aquarium houses approximately 16,000 marine creatures across 370 species, with 65 specialized tanks displaying everything from various fish to jellyfish and dolphins. Second, the 'Pearl Queen' sightseeing cruise allows you to navigate the complex topography of the Kujukushima islands for about 50 minutes, offering an up-close view of the magnificent scenery. Additionally, the marina provides active ocean-based leisure, such as yacht sailing and sea kayaking, ensuring a complete maritime experience.
While the facility is accessible year-round, the way you enjoy it changes with the seasons. The 'Sea Kirara' aquarium generally operates from 9:00 to 18:00; however, please note that during the winter season (November to February), the closing time is moved up to 17:00. Regarding the sightseeing boats, please be aware that sailings may be canceled due to heavy rain or strong winds to ensure safety. During the summer season, marine activities at the marina become particularly vibrant and popular.
There are numerous ways to connect with the sea here. The sightseeing cruise is a signature activity to experience the natural beauty of Kujukushima. For those seeking more active engagement, the marina offers yacht sailing and sea kayaking. Inside the aquarium, visitors can enjoy educational aspects, such as the pearl extraction experience corner, to deepen their understanding of marine life. There are also on-site shops where you can purchase snacks, soft drinks, and various souvenirs.
There are several other tourist spots related to Saikai National Park near the resort. Nearby attractions include the 'Mori Kirara' botanical garden and the 'Tenkaiho' viewpoint, which offers spectacular vistas. You can easily combine these into a full sightseeing itinerary.
