Koganezaki is a scenic cape located in Nishiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, facing Suruga Bay. Its most striking feature is the rock face that glows a brilliant golden color when bathed in the setting sun. This rock formation consists of layers of propylite—a result of volcanic activity and geothermal heat—which has been designated as a natural monument of Shizuoka Prefecture. Furthermore, it is renowned as one of the few spots in the Nishiizu area where you can witness the majestic silhouette of Mt. Fuji rising directly above the sea horizon.
The geological formation of this area is unique, shaped by ancient volcanic and geothermal processes. On March 18, 1988, the 'Koganezaki Propylite' was officially designated as a natural monument due to its significant scientific and aesthetic value. Historically, the stones quarried from this area were even used in the construction of Sunpu Castle. The area also holds literary significance, with a monument dedicated to the famous author Yukio Mishima located near the cape, creating a beautiful intersection of nature and literature.
Koganezaki offers a diverse range of natural landscapes. During sunset, the cliffs literally turn into gold, creating a mystical atmosphere alongside the shimmering sea. Visitors can also spot unique rock formations, such as a rock that resembles a horse's face. The area is well-developed as 'Koganezaki Park,' featuring walking paths, grassy areas, and observation decks. To the north, the Koganezaki Beach offers a 100-meter stretch of sandy shore with exceptionally clear water, perfect for exploring the shoreline.
The best time to visit is during the late afternoon to witness the sunset. The moment the sun dips toward the horizon and the cliffs glow intensely is the quintessential Koganezaki experience. During the summer months (July to August), the area becomes a popular destination for swimming and snorkeling. While the park is open year-round, visiting during the summer allows you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of a beach resort alongside the transparent, beautiful sea.
You can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the park's walking paths, observing the dramatic contrast between the steep cliffs and the ocean. At the beach, visitors can engage in water activities thanks to the high water clarity. The observation decks provide a panoramic view that includes Mt. Fuji, the Izu Islands, and the vast expanse of Suruga Bay.
The area around Koganezaki is a lush, natural part of Nishiizu Town, featuring scenic coastal driving routes. The surrounding region is dotted with beautiful coastlines, hot spring (onsen) facilities, and various natural landmarks. There are also several accommodations and restaurants along the coast where you can enjoy local cuisine while gazing at the ocean.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the trails and observation decks. If you plan to enjoy the beach, please bring swimwear and sandals. Regarding payments, we recommend carrying cash as some local facilities or parking areas may require it. While English signage is limited, please observe basic etiquette by taking your trash home and respecting the natural environment and the protected rock formations.
