Kobu-sugi is a remarkable natural monument located in Kamikoani Village, Akita Prefecture. It is a natural Akita Sugi (Japanese Cedar) characterized by a colossal, singular bump on its trunk. This massive protrusion reaches a circumference of up to 6.6 meters, making it a truly one-of-a-kind sight. Surrounded by a dense forest of towering cedars exceeding 40 meters in height, the area offers a profound sense of natural grandeur. Managed as a Nature Observation and Education Forest and a Mountain Village Plaza, the site features well-maintained walking paths that allow visitors to observe the history and structural beauty of these ancient trees up close.
The history of this natural cedar forest is deeply rooted in scientific and cultural preservation. In 1924, the area was designated as a natural forest harvesting test site to study the growth and structure of the Akita Sugi. Since 1988, it has been officially designated as a Nature Observation and Education Forest to promote forest environment education and the preservation of beautiful natural groves. The significance of the local Akita Sugi is even reflected in Japanese national history, as specimens from this region have been used in exhibitions at the National Museum of Nature and Science and even in the construction of the Kyoto Imperial Palace Guest House.
The absolute centerpiece is the "Kobu" (the bump) that gives the tree its name. The tree is extraordinarily large, with a diameter of 1.20m, a maximum bump width of 2.2m, and a trunk circumference of 3.8m (expanding to 6.6m at the bump section). Beyond this specimen, the forest contains other massive trees reaching heights of 56m, creating a breathtaking landscape of dense, ancient greenery. The site is well-equipped with informational signage, gazebos, and benches, providing a comfortable environment to observe these natural wonders from various angles.
While the forest's majestic presence can be enjoyed year-round, the scenery shifts beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the lush, vibrant green foliage creates a refreshing atmosphere. In autumn, the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation add a layer of seasonal beauty to the forest. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours when sunlight filters through the canopy, highlighting the intricate details and textures of the massive cedar bump.
The primary activity is forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku) while walking along the designated forest trails (such as the Shinrin-yoku Trail 3). The paths are designed for easy navigation, featuring handrails and stairs to help visitors traverse the forest terrain safely. The presence of gazebos and benches allows for moments of quiet reflection, letting you fully immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere of the ancient woods.
Kobu-sugi is nestled within the rich, untouched nature of Kamikoani Village. The area is filled with educational signage that explains the history of the natural cedar forest. After your walk, you can relax at the nearby Mountain Village Plaza or other designated rest areas to fully soak in the fresh, mountain air.
