Yoshimizu-en is a beautiful Japanese garden located in Akiota Town, Yamagata District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Designated as a scenic spot by Hiroshima Prefecture, it was created by the head of the Kakesumiya, who operated iron-making (tatara) in this region during the Edo period. As a private garden, it is generally not open to the public, except for specific Saturdays and Sundays in spring and autumn. The garden features a classic stroll-style design centered around the 'Tsubo-ike' pond, characterized by a landscape that harmonizes perfectly with nature. Additionally, the garden serves as a habitat for the Giant Tree Frog (Moriao-gaeru), a natural monument of Hiroshima Prefecture.
This area has long been a center for 'tatara' iron-making and served as the headquarters for Kakesumiya. In 1781 (Tenmei 1), the foundation of the current garden began under the direction of the 16th head, Sasaki Hakkemonosuke Masahito. During the Tenmei era, structures such as the Yoshimizu-tei tea house and Kanayako-sha shrine were built, and the Matsubayashi-an Yakushi-do temple was relocated here in Tenmei 3. The garden reached its current form by 1807 (Bunka 4). Throughout its history, many notable figures have visited this site. In 1951, it was officially designated as a scenic spot of Hiroshima Prefecture.
The garden is designed as a stroll-style garden, allowing visitors to walk around the perimeter of the pond. The central 'Tsubo-ike' pond and the 'Yoshimizu-tei' tea house situated on the northern hill form the most iconic views. Yoshimizu-tei is a Sukiya-style building constructed in the Tenmei 2 era, featuring a simple, elegant one-story structure with two-tatami and four-tatami rooms. Other notable structures include the Kanayako-sha shrine to the west and the Matsubayashi-an Yakushi-do to the south. Visitors can also observe the beautiful Edo Momiji (maple trees) and the habitat of the natural monument, the Giant Tree Frog.
While the garden shows different faces throughout the seasons, it is only open during specific periods. The main visiting times are the 'Frog Festival' in June and the general public openings in the spring and autumn. During the June opening, events related to the Giant Tree Frog may be held. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the pond and the surrounding landscape.
On public opening days, you can observe the historic architecture of the Yoshimizu-tei and the surrounding natural environment. The garden also features literary monuments related to the people who once thrived in this area, adding a layer of historical depth. Please note that this is primarily a place for quiet contemplation of the scenery rather than active physical activities; it is a space designed for the peaceful enjoyment of the harmony between nature and history.
Yoshimizu-en is nestled within the rich natural beauty of Akiota Town. The surrounding area, including sites like Sandankyo Gorge, is perfect for nature lovers and road trips. Access is best via car or bus. If using public transportation, the 'Kake Chuo' bus stop is the nearest major transit point.
As the garden features natural, uneven terrain, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since the garden is only open for limited periods, it is crucial to check the official schedule before your visit. To preserve the historical buildings and the delicate ecosystem, please follow all garden rules and maintain a quiet atmosphere.
