Located in Chonan Town, Chiba Prefecture, Kasamori-ji (Kasamori Kannon) is a profound Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect, founded in 784 by the monk Saicho. Its most striking feature is the Kannon Hall, built in the unique 'Shiho-kenzo' style, which appears to hang precariously over a steep cliff. This architectural marvel is designed to embrace the surrounding scenery and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. History & Cultural Background

The history of Kasamori-ji dates back to the late Nara period in 784. It is said that Saicho carved an Eleven-headed Kannon Bodhisattva from a sacred camphor tree and enshrined it upon the mountain. In 1028, during the Heian period, the foundation for the current Kannon Hall was established by imperial decree. For centuries, this site has been a sacred destination, serving as the 31st temple of the Bando Sanjusankannari pilgrimage route. The Kannon Hall has been meticulously preserved and is currently protected under the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties as a National Important Cultural Property.

The absolute highlight is the 'Kannon Hall.' This structure is built into the cliffside and surrounded by corridors on all four sides—a rare architectural form known as 'Shiho-kenzo.' Additionally, the presence of 'Tsuri-toro' (hanging lanterns) adds a touch of ancient charm to the grounds. Seasonal Recommendations & Best Times to Visit

Kasamori-ji reveals a different face with every season. Spring (around March to May) is particularly spectacular, as weeping cherry blossoms and Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full, creating a stunning contrast against the ancient architecture. The temple is also beautiful during the season of fresh greenery and autumn foliage. Please note that visiting hours vary by season: from April to September, the temple is open until 4:30 PM, and from October to March, it closes at 4:00 PM. Due to the cliffside location, access to the Kannon Hall may be restricted during heavy rain or high winds for safety.

Pet Policy

If visiting with pets, they must be kept in a pet carrier when entering the Kannon Hall (excluding service animals). Pets must be on a leash at all times in the temple grounds.

Accessibility

Due to the cliffside architecture, there are many stairs and uneven surfaces. Movement in wheelchairs is extremely difficult.
