Kanda House is a traditional folk museum located in the historic village of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture. This facility is widely loved by visitors as a living museum that preserves the traditional architectural styles and the wisdom of ancestors. Inside the building, you can directly observe the essence of traditional Japanese life through the display of various tools used in daily life and the central sunken hearth (irori) area.
The Kanda House is a Gassho-zukuri-style structure that has been passed down through many generations. The building serves as a vital historical resource, demonstrating how people managed to live and thrive within a harsh natural environment. It is a precious place where you can learn how architectural styles and the usage of household tools have evolved and been preserved over a span of 200 years.
The museum offers different displays and spaces on each level. On the 1st floor, there is a relaxation space with an irori (sunken hearth), allowing you to feel the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese room. On the middle floor, you can see the "fire-watching window" (bimado) used to monitor the hearth. From the 2nd to the 4th floors, various tools that supported daily life—such as those for sake brewing, forestry, sericulture (silkworm rearing), and weaving—are on display. Additionally, the 4th floor features an attic observation space.
The scenery of Shirakawa-go changes beautifully with the seasons. Especially during summer (July and August), the lush greenery provides a stunning backdrop for the Gassho-zukuri houses. The museum is open from 10:00 to 16:00, with the last admission at 15:50. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is recommended, as it allows you to clearly see the intricate details of the architectural structure and the displayed artifacts.
By exploring each floor of Kanda House, you can learn about the traditional Japanese way of living. You can connect with the wisdom of the past through the hearth space on the 1st floor and the various tools displayed on the upper floors. There are also signs available for commemorative photography, allowing you to capture beautiful photos against the backdrop of this traditional space.
Kanda House is located within the Shirakawa-go village. The surrounding area is filled with other beautiful Gassho-zukuri houses, making it a wonderful place for a scenic stroll. The entire village maintains its historical landscape, offering a perfect environment to enjoy traditional architecture alongside the natural scenery.
