Iwami Tatamigaura is a scenic spot designated as a National Natural Monument located in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. Situated at the tip of a hill rising approximately 50m above sea level, it features a massive 49,000 m² wave-cut platform and dramatic sea cliffs shaped by the relentless power of the waves. The platform is covered with regular, small cracks that make it look like traditional Japanese tatami mats, earning it the names "Senjoshiki" or "Tora-no-ura." It is a place where the raw strength of nature and exquisite geological beauty coexist.
This area has a long history as a representative landmark of the Iwami region, often celebrated in classical Japanese poetry. The geological layers tell the story of a land once submerged under the sea. The sandstone layers contain fossils of shells and ancient plants, serving as a "natural museum" that chronicles the history of the Earth. It was officially designated as a National Natural Monument on March 25, 1932.
Visitors can discover a variety of natural sculptures at Iwami Tatamigaura. The landscape is dotted with rounded nodules (rocks) created by wave erosion, various fault lines, and sea caves. The site is also highly valued for its geological significance, with spots where one can observe numerous shell fossils and even whale fossils within the sandstone layers. The texture of the rock faces, carved by the sea, offers a profound sense of natural artistry.
The scenery of Iwami Tatamigaura changes beautifully depending on the weather and the angle of the sunlight. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sky, the ocean, and the beige-to-brown rock surfaces creates a highly photogenic view. The appearance of the wave-cut platform and the tide pools also changes with the tides. For the best observation of the geological formations, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
