Ishiwari-zakura is a famous cherry blossom spot with a truly unique landscape, located within the premises of the Morioka District Court in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. The most striking feature, as its name suggests, is the way the Edohigan cherry blossom has grown by "splitting a massive rock." This giant tree, with a trunk circumference of 4.3 meters and a height of 10 meters, appears to embrace a massive 21-meter granite rock. The sight of the tree coexisting with the harshness of nature and blooming with such strength is overwhelming to all who visit. This dynamic sculptural beauty of nature, appearing suddenly amidst functional urban buildings, is the exclusive charm of Ishiwari-zakura.
This cherry tree was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1923 (Taisho 12). With an estimated age of approximately 360 years, it is a historic tree that has watched over this land for centuries. It has been carefully managed and protected despite the unusual environment of growing through a massive rock. The presence of several support pillars used to stabilize the tree reflects the deep affection and history of care provided by the local community to pass this precious cultural asset to the next generation. Morioka is home to many other cherry trees designated as National Natural Monuments, and the Ishiwari-zakura is one of the most precious natural heritages of the city.
The greatest highlight is the beautiful display of Edohigan cherry blossoms that bloom with the arrival of spring. Although Ishiwari-zakura is located on the grounds of the Morioka District Court, you can view it from the sidewalk even outside of official court hours. Comfortable clothing is recommended for walking.
