Aoike Pond (Mishaka-ike) is a breathtaking scenic pond located within the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters. It is widely renowned as the inspiration for the masterpiece 'Green Echoes' (Midori Hibiku) by the legendary Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama. When the water is still, it acts as a perfect mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and trees with such clarity that it evokes a deep sense of awe in all who visit. The pond covers an area of about 0.1 hectares with a maximum depth of 8 meters, capturing the essence of Japanese natural serenity.
The pond was originally completed in 1933 as an agricultural reservoir. Historically, the region faced challenges in agriculture due to the cold water, but through the management of spring water, the environment was optimized for rice cultivation. The name 'Mishaka' is believed to be derived from the 'Mishayama Mikari Shinji' ritual of the Suwa Grand Shrine, suggesting that this land has long been regarded as a sacred and spiritual site. Today, it is a cherished cultural and natural spot loved by tourists and photography enthusiasts alike.
The greatest charm of Aoike Pond is the 'mirror reflection' seen on calm days. The sight of the larch forests and mountains reflected on the flawless, still surface is nothing short of a work of art. Visitors can also observe various flora such as bellflowers and lilies, as well as wildlife including ducks, damselflies, and butterflies. The unique ecosystem, including the mosses on the pond bed, adds to the natural beauty of this location.
