Takao Green Land is a comprehensive park covering 66.2 hectares in Meito-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. It is affectionately known as the 'Forest of Itako.' This area is a certified nature-coexistence site, characterized by its abundant water-related landscapes such as terraced rice fields, wetlands, and ponds. It serves as an excellent location to learn about the natural water cycle while enjoying a peaceful environment that feels far removed from the city.
The region was originally part of the Owari Hills, a landscape of fields and woodlands. The name 'Takao' is derived from the former Takao Village in Aichi District. The development of this green space began on February 15, 1958, as part of an urban planning project to preserve the natural landscape. Additionally, due to its open and spacious terrain, the area has been designated as a wide-area evacuation site following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995.
The park features various areas that utilize the natural topography. In the terraced rice field area, you can observe local community efforts in water management and grass cutting, showcasing the deep connection between the people and the land. Notable landmarks include the Tsukano-iri Pond, the Ibori Pond, and the Alnus wetland. Walking through the designated trails allows visitors to experience the various components of a healthy natural ecosystem firsthand.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, the terraced fields and wetlands offer different expressions depending on the season. Recommended routes include the path through the weeping cherry tree village in the north and the wetland areas. Depending on the season, special events such as nature observation sessions or bamboo craft workshops may be held (please check the schedule in advance for specific dates and availability).
A variety of programs themed around nature are available. These include wildlife observation sessions (such as searching for creatures in the rice paddies), guided walks to learn about the Satoyama ecosystem, and bamboo craft workshops using harvested bamboo. These activities are designed to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the natural environment.
Takao Green Land is located in Meito-ku, Nagoya, and is adjacent to Kakamigahara City. It is easily accessible from the urban center, providing a lush, green escape amidst the surrounding residential areas.
As you will be walking through natural terrain, we recommend wearing comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing. If you are participating in a nature observation event, please bring clothes that can get dirty, a hat, and water. Carrying items like gloves, boots, or a magnifying glass can also enhance your experience. To protect the local environment, please follow all park rules, carry your trash back with you, and maintain a quiet atmosphere during your visit.
