Hoshigayama Park's 'Satsuki no Sato' is a nature-rich destination located at an altitude of approximately 450 meters. Its most iconic feature is the spectacular display of 50,000 Satsuki azalea bushes that bloom from late May to early June. During this period, visitors can witness a breathtaking contrast between the vast expanse of pink blossoms and the deep blue of the Sagmi Sea, stretching toward the beautiful coastline of the Manazuru Peninsula. This harmonious blend of natural greenery, sea, and floral colors offers a serene and unforgettable experience.
The area is also steeped in local history. The surrounding Nango-yama hiking trails feature several spots related to Minamoto no Yoritomo, a famous historical figure. For instance, you can find traces of history such as 'Jikansui,' a site associated with Yoritomo's retreat, and 'Kodoji Jizo,' dedicated to Junkaisho, a benefactor of Yoritomo. Exploring this area allows you to enjoy not just nature, but also a walk through the cultural layers of the region.

The highlight of the park is the 'Satsuki Carpet'—the sight of countless pink azaleas in full bloom. Another unique feature is the 'Yuuo no Kane' swing bell. Ringing the bell allows the clear, resonant sound to drift through the air, blending beautifully with the natural surroundings. From the observation deck near the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Sagami Sea; on clear days, even distant islands are visible on the horizon.
The best time to visit Hoshigayama Park is from late May to early June to see the Satsuki azaleas in full bloom. However, the scenery changes with the seasons; from early October to late December, the nearby Nango-yama area features vibrant citrus orchards, offering a different kind of natural beauty to enjoy.
Activities primarily consist of hiking and nature walks. You can traverse the Nango-yama hiking course while discovering historical sites. Additionally, during the peak Satsuki blooming season, the 'Satsuki no Sato Marche' is sometimes held, where you can discover local specialties such as fresh vegetables, handmade jams, and Ashigara tea. It is a perfect way to reconnect with nature and refresh your spirit.
The park is surrounded by the rich natural beauty of Yugawara. The Nango-yama hiking course is accessible via bus from Yugawara Station, with well-maintained routes passing historical landmarks. The nearby views of the Manazuru Peninsula and Hatoshima Island also make this a highly attractive area for coastal scenery lovers.
As the park is located on a mountain, please be aware that it can be windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or outer layer. For hiking, sturdy and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that there is a distance of approximately 300m from the parking area to the park, so dress accordingly for easy movement.
