Hori Garden (formerly the Hori Family Garden) is a National Scenic Beauty located in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. The most striking feature of this garden is the coexistence of diverse landscapes and architectural styles from different eras. Within a single site, you can experience the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period (the main house), the Meiji period (the Rakusan-so guest house), and the Taisho period (the Warakuen). This creates a high-class, unified space where nature and architecture are perfectly integrated.
The garden developed as the residence of the Hori family. The grounds preserve several significant structures, such as the Edo-period main house, the Meiji-period Rakusan-so guest house, and various storehouses (kura) and gates. These are not merely historical relics but essential elements that compose the garden's scenery. Details such as the light-providing tower structures and the intricately designed transoms (ranma) showcase the unique architectural styles of the Hori family and hold immense historical value.
The garden is composed of four distinct garden areas, each offering a different view and era: the 'Main Garden' (Edo period), the 'Rakusan-so Garden' (Meiji period), the 'Warakuen Garden' (Taisho period), and the 'Outer Structure Garden' (former Hatasako Hospital). Additionally, the architectural elements like the Sukiya-style Rakusan-so guest house, the traditional storehouses, and the gates add profound depth to the scenery. Observing the subtle differences in architectural design is a unique pleasure here.
The garden's expression changes beautifully with the seasons. The most recommended time to visit is from late October to mid-November, when the mountainside turns into a vibrant display of autumn colors, with maple leaves and foliage surrounding the architecture. This period offers the most stunning color contrasts between nature and the historic buildings. During the season of fresh greenery, special events such as light-ups may also be held.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while appreciating the historical architecture. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the evolution of Japanese architectural styles by observing details like the transoms and tower structures.
