Honto-ji is the head temple of the Nichiren sect, located in Hiraga, Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. Often referred to as the "Hydrangea Temple," it is renowned for its stunning gardens and natural landscapes that transform beautifully with each season. As a significant center for Nichiren Buddhism, it has long been a place of profound spiritual importance for both the local community and pilgrims. The greatest appeal of Honto-ji lies in its ever-changing natural scenery. The temple becomes particularly crowded and beautiful during the hydrangea season in early summer and the autumn foliage season. Additionally, the ritual prayers (Kito) and the use of wooden tablets (Kifuda) for various blessings are central elements of the temple's spiritual life.
Honto-ji offers entirely different atmospheres depending on the season. From May to June, the hydrangeas—the source of its nickname—are in full bloom. The autumn season is also a must-visit time when the entire temple grounds are bathed in brilliant colors. The general visiting hours are from 5:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). Visiting in the early morning allows you to experience the profound silence of the temple, while the daytime offers a bright, vibrant atmosphere. Please note that during periods of paid worship/rituals, the hours are typically 9:00 to 16:30.
Within the temple grounds, various traditional Japanese prayers and rituals are performed. These range from general blessings for family safety, academic success, and traffic safety to special prayers for easy childbirth and Shichi-Go-San celebrations. Beyond religious rituals, the temple also hosts cultural activities such as yoga and calligraphy, providing a unique opportunity to connect with Japanese spirituality and lifestyle in a serene, authentic environment.
Honto-ji is situated in the Hiraga area of Matsudo City, Chiba. The surrounding neighborhood is a peaceful residential area, allowing visitors to enjoy a stroll through a typical Japanese local landscape. The temple is easily accessible from urban areas, being within walking distance from Kita-Kogane Station on the JR Joban Line.
When visiting a temple, it is customary to wear modest and respectful clothing. As the grounds may contain uneven paths or gravel, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that cash is required for purchasing wooden tablets or participating in specific rituals. English-language support is limited, so it is helpful to check information in advance. Photography is subject to temple rules, and filming or photography during active rituals or prayers is strictly prohibited. Please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor throughout your visit.
