Hōmei Shijūhatchitaki is a stunning natural scenic spot located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, where numerous waterfalls of varying sizes cascade down in a layered formation. It is situated near the Seikou Bridge along National Route 48, upstream of the Hirose River. The name 'Hōmei' (meaning 'Phoenix Cry') comes from the beautiful, melodic sound of the water, which is said to resemble the cry of the legendary Phoenix. The sight of multiple waterfalls flowing down the rocky steps amidst dense, lush forests is a true masterpiece of natural art.
This area was once known as 'Bōmeki no Taki.' The name 'Shijūhatchitaki' (Forty-Eight Waterfalls) has been used since the Edo period, referring to the total number of falls including the various tributaries in the upper reaches. Local legends also tell of a celestial maiden (Tennyo) who descended to this very spot to perform a dance, adding a mystical layer to this historic landscape. In modern times, the name was changed to reflect the beautiful, bird-like sounds of the water.
The greatest attraction is the view from the high-altitude observation deck overlooking the upper reaches of the Hirose River. From this vantage point, you can see the magnificent sight of multiple waterfalls cascading one after another. With a drop of approximately 25 meters and a width of about 10 meters, the contrast between the white, energetic water and the surrounding greenery or autumn colors is breathtaking. Every visit offers a new discovery as the waterfalls change their appearance with the seasons.
The scenery changes beautifully throughout the year. From early summer to summer, the contrast between the vivid fresh greenery and the white water spray creates a refreshing atmosphere. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a deeply emotional and colorful landscape reflected in the stream. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as the bright light enhances the clarity of the water and the power of the falls, making it ideal for photography.
Activities primarily include nature walks, hiking, and photography. Through the well-maintained paths, you can feel the power of the falls and listen to the soothing sounds of nature up close. The observation deck provides a dynamic view of the cascading water. It is an ideal environment for quiet contemplation or observing the subtle shifts in the seasons. Additionally, the nearby hot spring areas make this a great place to relax and refresh after a day of exploring.
There are several notable spots near Hōmei Shijūhatchitaki. The nearby 'Sakunami Onsen' is a popular destination to visit in conjunction with the falls for a relaxing hot spring experience. Another nearby landmark is the 'Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery,' allowing travelers to create a perfect itinerary that combines natural beauty with industrial culture and whisky tasting.
As this is a natural riverside area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Sneakers or trekking shoes are best suited for the terrain, which may include wet rocks or stairs. Please prepare cash (Japanese Yen) for local transportation or nearby facilities. English-language signage and staff support are limited within the natural area itself. No prior reservation is required, but please be mindful of weather conditions and water levels. For accessibility, please note that the natural terrain includes steps and slopes, making full wheelchair access difficult.
