Hirugami Onsen is a renowned hot spring destination located in Achi Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. The area's history is famously tied to the discovery of hot springs during tunnel construction for the former JNR Nakatsu River Line. Today, it has developed into the most significant hot spring town in southern Nagano, hosting numerous high-quality accommodations. The most distinctive feature is its natural spring water, which boasts a high alkalinity of over pH 9, offering a luxurious bathing experience amidst a serene, natural environment.
The modern history of Hirugami Onsen began in 1973, when hot springs were unearthed during tunnel excavation for the Nakatsu River Line. However, historical records of hot springs in this region date back much further, with mentions in 18th-century documents such as 'Yuya Gongen' (1711) and 'Shinshu Ina-gun Mura-kagami' (1740). While the region was once known for tobacco cultivation, the discovery of the hot springs and the improved accessibility via the Chuo Expressway transformed it into a thriving hot spring resort. The area also holds deep cultural roots, being home to historical sites like Achi Shrine, where the deity of wisdom, Omoikane-no-mikoto, is enshrined.

Visitors to Hirugami Onsen can enjoy various facilities that utilize the mineral-rich waters and experience local culture. There is a public heated pool that uses the local hot spring water, allowing you to feel the benefits of the minerals even while swimming. In the heart of the town, the 'Asaichi Plaza' (Morning Market) serves as a vibrant hub for local specialties. Here, you can find fresh vegetables harvested from Achi Village, as well as konnyaku and traditional pickles. You may even encounter unique local food items related to traditional insect-based diets, offering a glimpse into the regional culinary heritage.
While Hirugami Onsen is beautiful year-round, the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons are particularly recommended. During these times, you can enjoy the changing colors of the surrounding nature alongside your soak. The Asaichi Plaza begins operations around 6:00 AM, so visiting in the early morning allows you to experience the lively atmosphere and collect fresh local ingredients. For a more tranquil experience, bathing in the hot spring facilities during the late night or very early morning is highly recommended to soothe the fatigue of the day.
Beyond just bathing, you can engage deeply with the local culture and nature. Activities include exercising in the heated pool using the hot spring water, relaxing in foot baths, and searching for local delicacies at the morning market. At the Asaichi Plaza, interacting with the local community through the purchase of traditional ingredients and vegetables provides a sense of local life. Additionally, walking tours through the surrounding natural landscapes are a perfect way to complement your relaxation in the hot springs.
The area surrounding Hirugami Onsen is filled with the abundant natural beauty of Achi Village. The location is highly convenient for tourists, with easy access from the Chuo Expressway interchanges. Nearby historical sites, such as Achi Shrine, allow travelers to combine a relaxing hot spring stay with a journey through local history. The peaceful scenery and scenic landscapes make it an ideal place for a slow-paced getaway.
